We have the spot (our favorite campsite), the spot 2 and even spot west (Wind River Range). Our search continues for Spot 3 in the Allegheny National Forest.
SPOT 2
There is a place we like to camp in Allegheny National Forest but we can only go there after significant rain fall. The camp site is by a creek but the creek can be dry. Since we got a lot of rain recently Leann suggested we go there for an overnight trip. We actually went on a weekend which is shocking for us in retirement.
Leann and Sammy, they both love backpacking.The area is lush due to all of the recent rain.This is a very quiet campsite due to the slow moving creek and distance from a road.Red Chanterelle or Russula emetica? No idea.The humid weather took its toll on Sammy but he perked up when I opened my cheese and pepperoni appetizer. He’s 15 and of course I sharedI took my saw for this trip but did not use it. I only burned what I could break with my hands and feet. This site gets very little use so gathering wood is easy, it’s everywhere. Backpacking karma: leave wood for the next campers. Theory goes if you leave wood, there should be wood when you arrive at your next camp. Does not always work but I will keep trying. We don’t think anyone has been in this site since our last trip here. I might be leaving wood for us. KARMA!No idea what this is but I liked how it looked.
IN SEARCH OF SPOT 3(FROM SPOT 1)
Good weather was forecasted so we met our friends for an overnight in Allegheny National Forest. We stayed at our favorite campsite (SPOT 1) and planned to hike up the other creeks in search of nice campsites.
We have been on this trail so many times we started naming unique features. This is the spaceship.This is porcupine corner. Sammy saw his first porcupine here and went crazy, he wanted to eat it. Fortunately Leann had him on the leash so the porcupine and Sammy were both safe.Mushrooms are tough to ID, any mycologist’s reading this, let me know.Sammy has been here so many times he knows when to turn left and head to camp. This site is getting more use since the forest service updated their maps and added potential camping areas including this one to the map. On one of our trips we met the trail leader that added this site to the map. I called her a bitch and we all laughed. She knew I was kidding, was I?We don’t have a name for this rock but since Sierra is looking for frogs, let’s go with Sierra.We hiked down to Triple Forks and then up the east fork of Minister Creek to see if we could find Spot 3. This is probably the prettiest section in the area. Numerous small waterfalls and water flowing over slabs of granite. We saw a couple of campsites but nothing that is worthy of a SPOT designation.
