Some Union soldiers used their own money to buy a 44 caliber Model 1860 Henry rifle. The Henry cost a private about 4 months pay but it held 15 rounds of ammunition.

Confederate forces held the high ground leading to intense fighting. The June 27 assault resulted in roughly 3,000 Union casualties compared to 1,000 Confederate losses.
Intense fighting occurred at at Cheatham’s Hill or the “Dead Angle,” where Union troops attacked entrenched Confederates.
While a Confederate tactical victory, Sherman ultimately outflanked Johnston, forcing the Confederates to withdraw toward Atlanta.
