MAMMOTH CAVE

We had a 3 day weekend and planned to go backpacking, In true NE Ohio fashion the weather was terrible, same for Pennsylvania and West Virginia. So we looked at weather.com and the closest good weather was Kentucky. There also was a national park there that we had not visited, even better we were able to get a campsite last minute. Off we went

#46, at this point we had 13 to go
The big attraction is the cave but there are some nice trails also.
Interesting way to get across the river. For the Clint Eastwood fan’s I was hoping this was not going to be a Missouri boat ride.
One car at a time, fortunately it was not busy
We signed up for a tour of the cave, you had to ride the shuttle buses to the entrance
The Ranger guiding the tour asked everyone, have you ever wanted to know what it’s like to get flushed down a toilet? You are about to find out. You go in this door and start a steep winding descent. The tour was really good but no pictures allowed.
The campground was really nice, big sites, quiet and showers.
Can’t they spell in Kentucky?
Obviously they don’t want anyone going into this cave.
Leann at the Green River overlook
This is one of the caves you can go into without a guide
You can’t get very far, basically down the steps and back up.

The weather was good, the campground was nice and we saw another national park. All in all a great way to spend a long weekend.
