Categories CONGAREE & GREAT SMOKEY MOUNTAINS We visited Leann’s sister in SC. She was a great tour guide and took us to Congaree and some great hiking locations in the SC mountains. Western SC was a surprise to me, I had no idea how rugged and scenic it is. Julie on the boardwalk on return trip On top of Table Rock Mountain, we got a lot of use out of the carrier. The best view was at the top where we started. We stopped at GSMNP on the way back to Ohio. This is the first of many trips here. The girls taking a break by Ramsey’s Cascade, this was a beautiful hike through an old growth forest. Lunch break by an Appalachian Trail shelter near Charlie’s Bunion. Leann, Jamie and I returned for a day hike and backpacking trip. This is Leann and Jamie after a long hike to the top of Mount Le Conte Jamie liked these guys, they haul supplies to the LeConte Lodge. Start of a 3 day backpack loop beginning at Big Creek. Leann and Jamie glad to be at the top after another long climb. In the Smokies you are either going up or down. The weather turned lousy for the last night of the trip: rain, wind and cold. Jamie looks comfortable. We returned years later to complete another 3 day backpack trip. Nice campsite in the woods This requires an explanation. The Smokies work off a permit system, you send in your itinerary and if accepted you have to stick with what you submitted. We just completed a 10 mile hike to our designated camping area for the night. We did not know that the park had closed the site due to bear activity. They were suppose to notify us but didn’t. We pulled out the maps and realized the next site was another six miles, this picture was taken with 3.7 to go.
