CAPE LOOKOUT NATIONAL SEASHORE

ESTABLISHED: MARCH 10, 1966

ACRES: 28,243

We could have just stopped at the visitor center and called it a day but we are making an effort to give each park enough time and not rush through. We booked a ferry that left from Harkers Island and visited 2 islands: Shackleford Banks and Cape Lookout.

Our ride for the day

The Whytes, hard to tell but it was HOT! High temp was 105.

Shackleford Banks

The wild horses of Shackleford Banks are a herd of over 100 free-roaming Banker ponies. Believed to be descendants of 16th-century Spanish shipwrecks, these federally protected mustangs survive entirely on their own.

Gaillardia Pulchella, commonly known as Indian blanket or Firewheel.

The beach was packed.

Cape Lookout Lighthouse is being reparied.

White Egrets were constantly flying in and out of this area.

I wondered how they got people on and off the ferry. There was a dock where we started and ended but not on the other 2 islands, mystery solved.

HAPPY TRAVELING, STEVE
