ISLE ROYALE

At this point we had completed many overnight and some 2 night backpacking trips. We were ready to complete our first week long trip. We decided it should be East of the Mississippi, not sure why. I did my usual obsessive research and decided on Isle Royale in Michigan. Isle Royale is an island in Lake Superior and is only accessible by boat or bush plane. We were members of the NEOH Backpacking Club, you can post a trip and other people can sign up and go along. This was a very popular trip and we ended up turning people away.

Due to the size of the group we rented a 15 passenger van and left early Saturday morning for the 12 hour drive to Copper Harbor. It rained almost the entire drive. Our hotel was close to the lake and that night I could hear the wind howling across the water, I got a little worried about the 3 hour ferry ride to Rock Harbor. My worries were proven true. The boat was rocking the entire trip. There was a sizable group of people in the back of the boat and they were taking turns feeding the fish. I took one look and headed back inside. We docked in Rock Harbor and people were very anxious to get on land.

The Vomit Comet, my nickname for it anyway
Ready to hit the trail

Our last night on the island
Seventh and last day on the trail, ready for a shower and a cold beer. Fortunately the boat ride back to Copper Harbor was very smooth
Returning is on my list. Next time, I would take a bush flight and land on the west side of the island. Hike the entire island west to east and then take the boat back.
