LITTLE BIGHORN BATTLEFIELD

ESTABLISHED JANUARY 29, 1879

765 ACRES

The monument honors those who fought in the 1876 battle between Cheyenne and Lakota warriors against the 7th US cavalry. US military action was requested by chief Blackfoot of the Crow Nation to counter incursions by the Lakota.

Although the battle was a significant victory for Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse it led to more pressure to force their tribes on to reservations.

This granite monument is the site of Custer’s last stand.

The army death total of 268 included Custer, two of his brothers, his nephew and his brother in law.
