ICELAND HOUSES

It was the best of houses, it was the worst of houses. Renting a house can be a crap shoot. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t. On this trip we were 1 for 2.

HOUSE 1

House 1 is everything you look for in a rental. Everything you paid for works and it exceeded expectations in every regard. I loved it.

Nice view from the living room.

What’s not to like?

HOUSE 2

On the other side of the spectrum. This house started off bad and got worse. First off the owner gave us convoluted directions that none of us could follow. All she had to say was here is the pin, there is cell coverage all the way and just use Google Maps. Maps will take you to the front door. Too simple.

Next up was gate access. Apparently there are 2 gates for the property: one to get in and one to get out. Once we found the gates it was not a problem to get in: spin the dial and get the key, open the gate and drive in. For some reason the gate out required a cell phone that was at the house. Dial the saved number on the phone and drive out, there was no saved number. It only took an hour to get this corrected.

We finally arrived and first impression was not the best.

Iceland is known for fresh fish. We stopped at a local market hoping for Artic Char (sold out) and bought some Lingfish. The seller gave us very specific instructions on how to cook it in the oven. Leann prepped the fish and turned on the oven, it didn’t work. Leann overcame and did a great job pan frying it.

We were on a long trip and planned to do laundry. The house had a high efficiency washer/dryer combo. The high efficient washer ran for 90 minutes, the dryer did not work. Maybe that’s what makes it efficient What do you do with a bunch of wet clothes? Once again we overcame.

The worst part, the owner knew these appliances did not work and did not warn us our bother to get them fixed. She was great at apologizing but nothing else.

Deep breathes, all is right with the world.

HAPPY TRAILS, STEVE
