NINETY SIX

NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

Ninety Six came by it’s unusual name from traders estimating the distance to the Cherokee village of Keowee.

1775
The first major land battle south of New England during the American Revolution took place at Ninety Six. In 1775, a battle occurred between Patriot forces and Loyalist forces defending Ninety Six.

1781
From May 22 to June 18, 1781, Nathanael Greene led a siege of the British fort at Ninety Six. The siege involved 1,500 Patriot troops against 550 Loyalists defending the fort. The siege was part of the Southern Campaign of the American Revolution. Although Greene’s forces unsuccessfully attempted to capture the fort, the siege ultimately led to the British evacuating and burning the town.

Star Fort was an earthen fort with walls of 14 feet.

The Logan log house was built in the late 1700’s and is the oldest building in the county. The cabin was moved to the historic site in 1971.
