FORT BOWIE NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

ESTABLISHED: JULY 29, 1972

Fort Bowie was established in 1862 by the U.S. Army to protect travelers, mail coaches, and soldiers passing through the Apache Pass.

Fort Bowie also protected Apache Spring, which was the only reliable water source in the area. It also served as the central military base for operations during the Apache Wars and the campaign to capture Geronimo
