RUSSELL CAVE NM

We did a day trip here from our campsite in Cloudland Canyon State Park. Russell Cave is a monument due more to the human history than the cave itself. Artifacts were discovered that represented people living here for 10,000 years. It is one one of most complete records of prehistoric culture in the Southeast US.

The cave has a large opening that was used as shelter by prehistoric humans for thousands of years.

I learned a new term reading about the cave: long cave list. Russell Cave ranks 3rd in Alabama, 90th in the US and 314th globally.

Here are top 5 in the US, I never heard of number 5

Here are the global top 5. Cool, we visited the longest cave in the world.

The boardwalk was damaged by a storm and was still being repaired. This was as close as we could get.

After seeing the cave we did a hike to the ridge above the cave.

Leann moved this for me.
