ST. MARKS

ESTABLISHED IN 1931

83,000 ACRES

This was a gem, we went here 3 straight days and will go back. The refuge has 22 hiking trails including 56 miles of the Florida trail. There are also 160 miles of dirt roads closed to motor vehicles, a 20.5 miles paved trail and the access road which are all great for biking. Maybe next time we should stay a month.

St. Marks Lighthouse was originally built in 1831 and then rebuilt in its current location in 1842.

We saw about 8 spots where turtle nests were raided by some animal. There was a small hole by each nest so it might have been snakes.

Pinky is a celebrity. Pinky was blown into Saint Marks on the winds of Hurricane Michael and never left. Flamingo’s are native to Central and South America. This is a terrible picture from my phone but I grabbed an image from the internet to do PInky justice.

Sammy liked Pinky

Osprey, Sammy’s long lost cousin?

We saw a lot of alligators, I learned there is also a population of black bears. Interesting neighbors.

HAPPY TRAILS, STEVE
