Oliver Hazard Perry gained victory at the Battle of Lake Erie (1813) through superior firepower from newly built ships and strategic maneuvering that broke the British line. He showed personal courage after his flagship was crippled, leading him to transfer to the Niagara and press the attack. He subsequently forced the entire British fleet to surrender. His famous dispatch, “We have met the enemy and they are ours,” summarized this decisive win. The victory secured American control of the Great Lakes and forced the British to abandon Detroit.
