BUCKEYE TRAIL TO BLUE HEN FALLS

CUYAHOGA VALLEY NP

8.1 MILES, 797 FEET ELEVATION GAIN

We started from the North near Jaite, took the Buckeye trail south to Blue Hen Falls, then Boston and back on the Towpath Trail.
There is a steep climb to start the hike and then a nice section on this ridge.
Trail crews are doing a nice job of improving the trail.
Hemlock Ravine (my name for it) and one of my favorite areas in the park.
Blue Hen Falls which was/is a family favorite
Lots of new steps in this section.
Cuyahoga River
Towpath Trail, this is where the mules walked so they could pull the barges. The great flood of 1913 caused so much damage that repairs were too expensive so the canal was abandoned. The 1913 flood was the deadliest flood in Ohio history causing the deaths of an estimated 467people.
There is a first time for everything. I can now say I have seen a chicken in a cart being pulled by a bike on the Towpath Trail.
One of the old locks. The canal was dug by hand and was in operation from 1827 to 1913. The canal connected Akron to Cleveland (Lake Erie) and eventually to the Ohio River and other canal systems in Pennsylvania. The canal was first proposed by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson.
This section of trail was a “little” overgrown but we made it back to our car.

HAPPY TRAILS, STEVE
