The fort was built in 1872 over the main spring. This was due to a raiding party of Apache, Navajo and Paiute during the Black Hawk War in 1866. The fort was purchased by Brigham Young in 1873 for the church of latter day Saints. The church lost the property in 1887 due to the Edmonds Tucker Act. The act was an attack on polygamy supported by the church. The act imposed a fine and a prison term up to 5 years. It also dissolved the church and confiscated any property valued over $50,000. For consistency, maybe they should have included all US citizens that cheated on their spouse.
