We were talking to our friends about a place to camp. They recommended Hovenweep so we gave it a try. They were right.

We were walking round the campground and a couple told us about a rattlesnake on the road.

I have no idea how this rock was formed, must have been wind.

This soil is alive……
Cryptobiotic soil, is a living, dark, bumpy surface layer in arid ecosystems formed by cyanobacteria, algae, fungi, and mosses. This combination binds soil particles, prevent erosion, retain water like a sponge, and provide nutrients, acting as a foundation for plant life. The soil is extremely fragile and easily damaged by foot traffic or vehicles, recovery takes decades to centuries.

Hard to believe this was all done by hand. I liked the way they formed the buildings to the rocks.

Zoomed in view.
