WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT NHS

I would say this is an impressive resume.

Taft is the only person to be president and chief justice of the supreme court. His life long goal was to be on the supreme court, he just took a detour when he became president.

President William Howard Taft started the tradition of the ceremonial first pitch at a Major League Baseball game on April 14, 1910. For a Washington Senators vs. Philadelphia Athletics game, Taft threw the ball to star pitcher Walter Johnson establishing a presidential ritual that continues today.

Earlier Origins: The 7th inning stretch was a known practice in baseball before 1910, with some accounts tracing it back to the 1880s or even 1869. In a 1910 game Taft stood to stretch during a Senators game, and the respectful crowd stood with him. While not the inventor, Taft’s stature and presidential status lent significant attention to the act, turning it from a sporadic fan behavior into a nationally, recognized tradition. The song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game” is often played at the same time.

He was the first president to use the Oval Office and the White House garage and also kept the last presidential cow (Pauline Wayne).

HISTORY IS FUN, STEVE
