TIMPANOGOS CAVE

  • Timpanogos Cave was first discovered by teenagers James W. Gough and Frank Johnson in 1913 while they were exploring near Hansen Cave. They found the entrance while trying to find another way down the mountainside, and it became lost until it was rediscovered in 1921 by Vearl Manwill.
  • Lost and found: The original entrance was eventually lost, but Vearl Manwill, who grew up exploring the canyon, was inspired to find it again. He was advised by Martin Hansen to search at the same elevation as Hansen Cave.
  • Rediscovery: on August 14, 1921, Manwill and a small group successfully located the lost cave entrance, leading to its subsequent protection and development as a national monument.

Leann booked us a guided lantern hike into the cave. She was excited about it but unfortunately it was cancelled due to the government shutdown. We decided to stop by anyway and see if there was a hike we could do.

Cool visitor center that had a nice view

Bighorn Sheep but maybe this once should be called “Little Horn”

I am sure we will be in Utah again and may try again to complete the tour.

HAPPY TRAILS, STEVE
