WIND CAVE

We had not taken a road trip for a while so we decided the summer of 2015 that we should do a road/car camping trip to South Dakota. It was a good decision

We left after work on Friday and stayed at campground in Indiana, it was not very nice. We took out the back seats and just slept in the van. It did not take long to pack up in the morning.
Next stop was in Iowa and we loved this place. We took a bike ride before dinner and it was nice riding on totally empty country roads.
Our first destination was a return trip to Badlands for a couple of days of hiking and bike rides
Not many trees at the campground but the covered picnic table helped. This is one of the nicer national park campgrounds.
We did a day hike on the Castle Trail
This place is very dry, it would be a tough place to backpack.
Panorama Point
It’s not smoke, just a bunch of Bison kicking up dust.
You can see how the park got it’s name
Number 43! We packed up and headed to Wind Cave and then on to Custer State Park for 2 nights of camping
This is the original entrance to the cave. the cave was discovered when someone felt a cool breeze coming from between two rocks.
Imagine how long this took to form.
We did a hike up Black Elk Peak
At 7,244 feet, Black Elk is the highest peak east of the Rockies. It is not surpassed until you reach the Pyrenees in France.

George S. Mickelson Trail

The Mickelson trail is a 109 mile long bike trail that connects Deadwood to Edgewood. The entire trail is crushed stone but very well maintained. If we ever are able to get our new gravel bikes this will be on the list for a revisit.

There were not many other people on the trail

We love road trips, always have always will. We see a sign for something that sounds good and take a detour. Sometimes it’s worth the extra time, sometimes it’s not.
