AURORA: 10-11-2024

Leann says I am a nerd but she gets excited when the Kp index gets in the red zone.

Kp index?? Kp stands for Planetarische Kennziffer, which is German for “planetary index” It’s a 9 point scale that measures the level of geomagnetic activity in the Earth’s magnetic field.

  • Why should we care?
    • Measure magnetic storms
    • Should alerts and warnings be issued?
    • Predict best times to view the Aurora Borealis

High Kp index can impact power systems, spacecraft operations, radio signals and satellite navigation.

Kp Index Scale

  • Kp 1–4: Safe
  • Kp 5: Minor geomagnetic storm
  • Kp 6: Moderate storm
  • Kp 7: Strong storm
  • Kp 8: Severe storm
  • Kp 9: Extreme storm

We were in the severe zone on the 11th, Lean was thrilled.

Our oldest daughter Jennifer is also a fan and took the first 2 pictures from her house in Pennsylvania.

Leann took this picture from our front yard

Pictures of the Aurora look better than what you see with the naked eye. Camera’s are more sensitive to light and capture more detail.

HAPPY TRAILS, STEVE
