SAMMY HITS THE TRAIL

The weather was looking awesome and I was ready for another backpacking trip. That’s like saying Leann is ready for more birding. Leann wasn’t too excited about going but suggested we do a short trip and take Sammy. That sounded good to me.

First stop Sheetz in Franklin, Pennsylvania. I like Combo’s for a pre-dinner snack. Sammy knows he is going to get a few pieces.

Another trip on the North Country Trail in Allegheny National Forest.

It rained a lot the day before our trip. Rain always brings out the Red Efts, they were everywhere. This is the juvenile stage for the Eastern Newt. Newts can live 12-15 years.

Leann and her buddy on the trail.

The “spaceship”, our friends named it.

It is hard to beat a backcountry camp site.

Sammy on guard as usual.

Leann saw this American Toad while gathering firewood. Not many animals eat them since their skin tastes bitter. Major predators are hognose snakes and raccoons. The raccoons just eat the underbelly avoiding the skin. Yummy, tastes like chicken.

I think we have enough wood.

The morning after…..

Leann carries a sleeping pad and bag for Sammy. He does not handle cold very well.

Our sound track for the night. I love creek side camping

Leann said it looks like somebody raked the trail for us. Maybe they heard Sammy was visiting.

A good time was had by all.

HAPPY TRAILS, STEVE
