OCMULGEE NM

Human history at Ocmulgee spans from the Paleo-Indian period (Ice Age hunters) through the Mississippian culture (c. 900–1200 CE) to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation.

Ocmulgee is famous for hosting the largest archaeological dig in American history, yielding over 3 million artifacts.

We were able to go inside the Earth Lodge, most of the inside was protected by glass so idiots would not carve names etc. The lodge features an original 1,000-year-old floor, with a bird-shaped clay platform where leaders sat.

Great Temple Mound is a 55-foot-tall flat-topped mound used for ceremonial purposes. It took 10 million baskets of dirt to build the mound.
