ANTELOPE ISLAND

We first visited Antelope Island on a fly and drive hiking trip in Utah. We agreed to go back some day. It took longer than we planned but we finally made it.

Camping in the van is almost too easy. Back it into your campsite, put it in park and go for a hike. It’s a stretch to call this camping but we love it.

Bison chilling on the beach. That is the Great Salt lake in the background.

I love empty hiking trails.

Tic-Tac Toe, three Bison in a row.

The lake water is not drinkable and the island is very dry so I wondered how the bison got enough water. I did a little research and learned the island contains over 40 freshwater springs that support wildlife

Sorry but I have no idea how this was formed.

I like when you can see the trail disappear in the distance. If your tired it can be demoralizing but we were on a short hike.

Bison are impressive animals but they intimidate the hell out of me. Respect nature and you can live to tell the tale. The one in back is ripped.

Red sky at night…..

This was a short but steep hike with incredible views, we loved it.

Sunflower, sorry but I do not know the variety.

The “trail” was getting harder.

We are on the last push to the top. As we always told our daughters: it is just around the corner.

I think they need a new survey marker.

On the way back, it’s all downhill from here. We also told our daughters that on hikes, we were horrible parents.

It is hard to believe we are only 46 miles from downtown Salt Lake City.

So why did I take a picture of this? People with RV’s will understand the challenge of the dump station and how you get the top off the dump pipe. This was the best solution I have seen in all of our road trips. No rocks, bricks or other items to move out of the way. Just grab the rebar move it out of the way, dump and move it back. The simplicity brought tears to my eyes.

Last view from the island, we will be back.

HAPPY TRAILS, STEVE
