FIRST LADIES NHS

Since we travel all over the country seeing national park sites, we decided to see the one’s in our backyard.

This is at the entrance to the site. I assumed there would be a display for each first lady in order. I was wrong.

I anticipated learning about each first lady but this was one of the few displays. Apparently most of the site is a library that is not open to the public. So the public pays taxes to support the parks and then can’t access the information? Sorry, I have a problem with that. I was disappointed. I am glad we didn’t take 3 days to get here.

Part of the historic site is the Saxton-McKinley House. This is the childhood home of Ida Saxton. She became a first lady when William McKinley became the 25th president in 1897. Ida led a tragic life: both of her daughters died, her brother was murdered and her husband was assassinated on September 14, 1901.

THANKS FOR VISITING, STEVE
