Florissant Fossil Beds contains some of the richest and most diverse fossil deposits in the world, including petrified redwood stumps, well preserved insect fossils (butterflies and moths), plant fossils and various animals. The monument offers a glimpse into a prehistoric redwood forest from 34 million years ago. The area was preserved by ancient volcanic ash and mudflows.
