Judge Roy Bean: The only law west of the Pecos

Judge Roy Bean (c. 1825–1903) was a legendary, eccentric saloonkeeper and self-proclaimed “Law West of the Pecos,” He served as a Justice of the Peace in Langtry, Texas, during the late 19th century, holding court in his saloon and dispensing a unique brand of frontier justice that blurred the lines between law and legend.

The town saloon is named after Lillie Langtry who was a well know singer and actress from the 1890’s. Roy Bean was obsessed with her

In 1971 Hollywood made a movie loosely based on Roy Bean’s life. Paul Newman played the judge. The movie was directed by John Huston and had a stellar cast: Jacqueline Bisset, Tab Hunter, John Huston, Stacy Keach, Roddy McDowall, Anthony Perkins, Victoria Principal, Anthony Zerbe and Ava Gardner. Full disclosure, I have not seen the movie.
