CARL SANDBURG HOME

NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE

ESTABLISHED OCTOBER 17, 1968

Carl Sandburg won three Pulitzer prizes: two for his poetry and one for his biography of Abraham Lincoln. The bio was originally published in a 6 volume set. The first two books covered the prairie years, the last four covered the war years. Sandburg later produced a condensed one book version. This was referred to as the “definitive life of Lincoln”

Sandburg spent the last 22 years of his life on this 264 acre farm.

Sandburg’s wife Lilian raised award winning goats on the property. The Sandburg’s employed a number of servants and the house was built by slaves. The Sandburg’s were devout Socialists.

I thought seeing his desk where he wrote was cool until I read it was a reproduction.

Poetry, biographies and even movies: he was a talented writer.
