  • WHO WERE THE BUILDERS?
    • 700 – 1300 CE: The Effigy Moundbuilders flourish in the Upper Mississippi River Valley, constructing conical, linear, and animal-shaped effigy mounds (such as bears and birds) for ceremonial and burial purposes.
    • 850 years ago: Transition period from Late Woodland cultures to the Oneota tradition
  • Primary purpose of the mounds
    • Ceremonial and Sacred Sites: Many mounds acted as spiritual or ritual gathering places to connect indigenous communities with their ancestors and the natural world.
    • Burials: Certain mounds functioned as gravesites containing human remains or ceremonial items (such as pottery and tools).
    • Clan and Animal Symbols: The earthworks shaped like animals represented specific clan identities, spiritual guardians, or animal spirits.
    • Territorial and Celestial Markers: Researchers and indigenous traditions indicate that some mounds marked tribal or territorial boundaries, or aligned with seasonal and celestial events.

I hate to say it but the mounds were not obvious, I might have missed them without the signs.

The mound builders picked a beautiful construction site.
