Bike Rides Begin: First Time for Everything

One of my favorite movies is Breaking Away. Yes, I know it was made a long time ago. The movie made an impression on me because it made riding bikes OK and maybe even cool. At this time in my life I was riding a lot but I was always by myself. I didn’t know anyone else that liked to ride. So long solo rides in the country was the norm, well at least my norm. I watched the movie (many times) and thought riding bikes was OK, even if nobody else was riding.

I will never forget good friends planning a golf trip to Myrtle Beach and asked if I wanted to go. Sure, can I take my bike? Full disclosure I use to play golf but quite frankly I sucked. To me it was the most aggravating game ever invented. Carry a heavy bag and walk around chasing this little white ball. Wait a second, part of that sounds like backpacking. Backpacking is golf without the aggravation. Back to Myrtle Beach: during the day I rode my bike and then we got together for dinner and poker. Just so you know I did not see many other bikers, OK zero other bikers.

I am officially down a rabbit hole, come back to the light.

First bike ride of the year in late March. This might be the first time we cross country skied and biked in the same month. Maybe Ohio is OK after all, nope

OK, let’s land this plane. During rides, many bugs have landed in my eyes, some have landed in my mouth. One memorable fly flew right down my throat and I swallowed it whole. This was the first time I ever had one enter my ear. We rode threw an early spring swarm of unknown bugs and one flew into my ear. It felt like it was drilling into my brain and was buzzing the entire time.

Nerd alert: first thing I thought of was the bug scene from Wrath of Khan:

Second thing: how can I get this damn thing out of my ear before I become a puppet for Ricardo Montalbán.? I stopped my bike and poured a bottle of water into my ear in an attempt to drown the little bastard. At least it quit drilling and buzzing but now I do exactly what Leann tells me to do.
