We are headed South and will be stopping in Greensboro, NC. I used All Trails to research potential hikes. Just download the free app and enter your destination. All Trails will generate a list of trails that you can then sort and filter. First search showed 59 trails in the area.

These are the sort options, I don’t use this feature but you might find it useful.

You can also filter based on the following criteria. I use this feature all of the time.

I filtered the 59 trails to shows lengths between 5 and 12 miles
From the reduced list of 14 trails you can review each option and select which one you want to hike. Up to this point the app is free. You have to pay $35.99/year if you want to download the map. I recommend paying the fee if you hike where there is no cell service. This app integrates with Google Maps so you can even get directions to the trail head.

What do you get for the fee? If you don’t have cell service, the GPS chip on your phone will show your location (blue dot) on the downloaded map. It will also show your direction of travel and other trails in the area. Bottom line, you know exactly where you are. You can use this feature in airplane mode to limit battery usage. On a recent 3 day trip to Black Forest Trail I only used 50% of my battery.
I took this screen shot on a local day hike. The blue dot on the map below was my location when I took the screenshot. You can also see the direction I was headed.

HAPPY HIKING, STEVE
