


ARKANSAS POST TIMELINE
- 1686: Henri de Tonty establishes La Poste d’Akancas (Arkansas Post) near the Quapaw village of Osotouy.
- 1721-1722: The John Law colony attempts settlement which collapses.
- 1749: A Chickasaw raid forces the post to move.
- 1763: Following the Treaty of Paris, France cedes the territory to Spain.
- 1779: Spanish Governor Balthasar de Villiers moves the post to Ecores Rouges (Red Bluffs) due to flooding, renaming it Fort Carlos III.
- 1783: The Battle of Arkansas Post: The only Revolutionary War battle in Arkansas, where Spanish forces repelled a British-led Chickasaw attack.
- 1800: Spain retrocedes Louisiana to France via the secret Treaty of San Ildefonso.
- 1803-1804: United States purchases Louisiana (1803) and takes control of the post in 1804.
- 1819: Arkansas Territory is created; Arkansas Post becomes the first territorial capital.
- 1821: The territorial capital is moved to Little Rock, marking the beginning of the end for the post.
- 1863: Battle of Arkansas Post: Union forces capture Fort Hindman during the Civil War.
- 1960: The site is officially authorized as the Arkansas Post National Memorial
