The Reconstruction era (roughly 1865–1877 was established after the Civil War to reintegrate Southern states and define the legal status of 4 million newly freed African Americans. Key initiatives included the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments and military supervision under the Reconstruction Acts of 1867.

Frederick Douglas is a legendary leader during this time in American history.

Here are my favorite quotes by him.
“I prayed for freedom for twenty years, but received no answer until I prayed with my legs.”
“I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.”
“Power concedes nothing without a demand. It never did and it never will.”
“If there is no struggle, there is no progress.”
“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men.”
That last quote is still true today.
