NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

I was shocked to learn there are 570 national refuges in the US. The refuge system maintains 859,000,000 acres to protect wildlife and plants. Put another way this is 1,342,187 square miles. This is not much less than Alaska and Texas combined times 2, amazing. They are managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Teddy Roosevelt designated Florida’s Pelican Island as the first National Wildlife Refuge in 1903.

No, we are not planning on seeing all of them. If there is a refuge where we are travelling we will always stop. Leann loves them.
