GUNFLINT LODGE

We were discussing possible destinations for a February vacation with our friends. Most people would be thinking escape Ohio for some place warm, sunny and maybe a nice beach as an added bonus. Not us, let’s go to Northern Minnesota, I hear it’s beautiful in February. We read about Gunflint Lodge that offers miles of cross country ski trails and decided to go.

Outside of our cabin
Not fancy but it was nice to be able to either cook or go to the restaurant
Who is watching who?
All of the trails were groomed
We did not see many other skiers
Leann enjoying a day on the trails
Not a cloud in the sky which typically means; it’s cold outside.
Pine Grosbeak
One night we decided to snowshoe on the lake and head to Canada. It was minus 20 degrees when I took this picture
It looks cold and it was cold
You know it’s cold when the snow crunches as you walk
Breakfast was included with cabin rentals and the food was very good. One morning Leann and I were walking to breakfast when we noticed animals running on the frozen lake. It took us a few seconds since we don’t see these in Ohio: WOLVES!!
We did a hike so Leann could look for birds

We previously went to Yellowstone and now to Gunflint. Which do I prefer? The trails are better at Gunflint but the scenery and wildlife is better at Yellowstone. I prefer the cabins at Gunflint, nice to have the option of cooking or going to the restaurant. Maybe we should find another option, any suggestions?
