Looking back, it’s amazing how four simple words changed my life: anyone want a drink? I was in the Loft bar in downtown Kent, August 1982. I was with some friends when I asked the question. Of course, everyone said yes. Leann came over to say thanks. We had talked a few times but didn’t really know each other. We started talking, it was loud in the bar, so we stepped outside sat down and talked for about an hour. She was smart, funny, cute and I liked talking to her
I walked her back to her car and asked her out for the next night. She said yes and then I kissed her, I liked kissing her (still do). I called her the next day and we decided to see a movie. I am an avid reader and had just read The World According to Garp. The movie was just released so that was our first date. The movie was terrible but we had a great time. Six weeks later we were engaged, 10 months later we were married. Hard to believe that was 38 years ago.
Along the way we had 3 wonderful daughters that we dragged around the country on various travels. I can’t say they were always happy with our choices but for some reason they still take the occasional trip with us. Maybe it was the destinations: Maui for our 30th anniversary, Iceland for our 35th. Where to for our 40th?
Julie, Jamie, Jennifer
We are blessed that the girls are productive members of society, have good jobs, own a home and are in good relationships with guys we like. What more could parents ask for?
Jennifer, Jamie, Julie on a family vacation to Ocracoke in 2020. They still occasionally travel with the “parentals”. But it depends where we are headed: Iceland yes, week long backpack trips, not so much.
As I work on this blog. I get to see them grow up all over again.
HAPPY TRAILS, STEVE
