ELK TRAIL

This 18.4 mile point to point hike lies entirely in the Elk State Forest. Yes, there are Elk in Pennsylvania. We completed this hike many times and have only seen Elk once. Best bet to see an elk is drive on Route 555 between Dents Run and Benezette. You should see them picking apples from trees in front yards. This hike starts just east of Dents Run and ends in Benezette.

Day 1 is 11.4 miles to a camp above Dents Run

Day 2 is 6.8 miles mostly downhill to Benezette. Most people stop at the Benezette Hotel for one of their famous Elk burgers. Don’t worry it’s farm raised Elk.

The hike starts with a climb along Little Bear Run

I think this sign has been on the tree awhile

If you hike in Pennsylvania, eventually you will be on an old forest road.

Belle Draft

Climb up from Belle Draft gets a little rocky

I will post additional pictures from later trips. I would characterize this hike as a nice walk in the woods. One thing I do like is the campsite we use, it is very quiet and remote. Added bonus: it does not get used much so typically there is a lot of wood lying around for the campfire.

Elk, at least their butts anyway

Breakfast in bed, sometimes it’s just hard to get out of a warm sleeping bag.
